We made an early start today – before 7:00 am – and took off
through rural, small town America. It
rained through Maine and much of New Hampshire.
Then as soon as we crossed into Vermont, the sun came out and we were
able to enjoy all the purple and lavender lupine that grow wild along the
roadway. We decided against earning the
“This car climbed Mt. Washington” bumper sticker in favor of saving the
transmission. And again we let Mis
Navigate take us on a circuitous route -- must always check her proposed route
against an honest to goodness state road map before hitting the road. Geez.
The good news is that we made it to Ben & Jerry’s before
they closed, where we shared a banana split.
We decided against the factory tour, but enjoyed the video on the
history of the making of the company. A
couple of old, and really successful, hippie types from my generation... love
it.
The other good news is that the campground at Little River
State Park in Bolton, Vermont, is really serene. We can see the reservoir through the trees of
our campsite, where we (i.e., Charlie) are about to build a campfire. A glass of wine and a couple of beers and
we’re in for a nice relaxing night after today’s long drive.
